my nail biting

When I was a very young child, the only thing different about me, from the rest of my family and all the other kids, was, I bit my nails, now, I'm not talking nibbling my nails, like a lot of people do, but, extreme / chronic nailbiting, where the nails were less than 75% of the lenght
they should have been.
My nails were bitten right down, leaving just tiny slivers of nail, about 2 or 3mm, the nailbeds were sore and reddened, they hurt like fury, stinging pain, followed by a throbbing that would keep you awake at night.
Many times I had to put plasters (band-aids) to stop the seeping blood from spoiling my sheets
or clothing, I can still remember, being young, having to ask my mother if she would put a plaster on my nails, god the embarrassment, as she held my tiny hands and looked at my nails
before applying the plasters,
I often wonder, how many other people are affected by such severe nailbiting ?
Its called Onychophagia,
I'd like to hear from any other chronic biters
so, why not email me
